Victor Garber is the son of an actress and singer mother, Hope Garber (nee Wolf). She died of Alzheimer’s disease.
Garber started acting at the age of nine. He attended the Hart House of the University of Toronto, at the age of 15. Later he formed a folk band named ‘The Sugar Shoppe’ during his late teens, along with Peter Mann, Laurie Hood and Lee Harris. The band became moderately successful before it finally broke up. The band even performed on ‘The Ed Sullivan Show’ and ‘The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson’.
Victor Garber has acted in several American and Canadian films and television shows. He has also performed in several Broadway plays, some of them are ‘The Shadow Box’ (1977), ‘Sweeney Todd’ (1979), ‘They’re Playing Our Song’ (1981), ‘You Never Can Tell’ (1986), ‘Two Shakespearean Actors’ (1992), ‘Arcadia’ (1995) and ‘A Little Night Music’ (2009).
He was nominated for the prestigious Tony Awards for his performances in ‘Death Trap’ (1978), ‘Little Me’ (1982), ‘Lend Me a Tenor’ (1989) and ‘Damn Yankees’ (1994).
Victor Garber has also performed roles in Off-Broadway’s ‘Ghosts’, ‘Joe’s Opera’, Cracks’, ‘Wenceslas Square’, ‘Love Letters’ and ‘Assassins’.
Garber has appeared in different roles on television in ‘I had Three Wives’, ‘Queen’, ‘Cinderella’, ‘Frasier’, ‘Will & Grace’, ‘Justice’, ‘Ugly Betty’, ‘Eli Stone’, ‘The Last Templar’, etc. He is well known for his role of “Jack Bristow” in the television series ‘Alias’.
Garber is a versatile actor, who not only proved his metal on the stage and on the small screen of television but has also done well while acting in numerous films. He has played roles in films like ‘Godspell’, ‘Sleepless in Seattle’, ‘Exotica’, ‘The First Wives Club’, ‘Titanic’, ‘Annie’, ‘Legally Blonde’, ‘Home Room’ and ‘Green Lantern: First Flight’.
Victor Garber was nominated for the Emmy Award as the Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series for ‘Alias’, from 2002 to 2004. He earned the nomination under the category of Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy Series for ‘Frasier’ in 2001 and for ‘Will & Grace’ in 2005. In 2001, he was nominated for the same award in the category of Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Miniseries or a Movie for ‘Life with Judy Garland: Me and My Shadows’.
Garber was also nominated for the Screen Actor Guild Award under the category of Outstanding Performance by a Cast for ‘Titanic’ in 1998 and for the category of Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture for ‘Milk’ in 2009.
Apart from this, he has been nominated for various other awards in different categories until now, and he has won some of them.
Role in Alias
Victor Garber has played the role of “Jack Bristow” in ‘Alias’. He is a CIA agent and was a double officer of SD-6 in the past. He fathered Sydney, to come closer to the KGB spy, Irina Derevko, whose actual mission was to steal the secrets of CIA. He is however, very protective of his daughter and can do anything for her well-being.
