The first season of the series was aired on September 30, 2001. The first season had twenty two episodes in it. The season opens with a revelation that further leads into a murder. The protagonist of the series, Sydney Bristow is introduced to us as a young University student, who is secretly working for SD-6, supposedly a CIA agency. In the very first episode of the series Sydney confesses to her boyfriend that she is a spy. When the agency comes to know about this, they kill her boyfriend because of security reasons. Sydney, who is shocked by this, decides to go on a leave. After a leave of several months she is asked to join back, but later in the series she is told by her father, Jack that SD-6 is not a CIA division, but in fact a branch of a bigger, illegal organization known as the Alliance of Twelve, which seeks to make profits from stolen intelligence and weapons.

With this revelation about the agency, Sydney offers to work with the original CIA, who accepts her as a member who will destroy SD-6 from inside. So from now on, she will work as a double agent. Soon in the series she learns that her father is also a CIA agent, just like her.
So the series begins with Sydney taking this mission of destroying this fake agency, for which many a time she has to put her life in danger.
Sydney has to go through lot of mental trauma in the series, as her life is divided into two, one being her professional life and other her personal. She lives two lives in the series as she cannot tell anyone about her profession, so she is always struggling between her professional and personal life. On one hand she is given various missions to be solved and on the other hand she has to find out about the truth of her boyfriend’s murder. Though for that she takes help from her friend, Will. Through out the series, Will is looking for clues in order to solve the murder mystery of Danny and he keeps updating Sydney about the same.

The series also covers life of Sydney with her friends, love affairs and finding some very interesting facts about her mother’s death. Light is also thrown upon her relationship with her father. As far as her love life is concerned, in the first season she develops a strong relationship with her CIA handler Michael Vaughn, of whom she is skeptical at first but grows to trust him as her life becomes increasingly stressful.
